Name: Zidane Tribal
Age: 16
Game: FFIX
Weapon: none yet
Love Interest: none yet
Hut: #11
Hut-Mate: Larxene
Friends: none yet
Appearance:
Depending upon who you ask, Zidane stands between 5'6" and 5'9." Nonetheless, he's on the short side. But who cares about height when you can move around like a monkey and even hang by a prehensile tail? Yes, Zidane has a tail. It's about a yard long and is the color of his hair, which is a deeper blond. He has a shock of bangs and keeps his longer strands of hair tied back. In a ribbon, no less. It ties in (ZOMG, a pun!) with his medieval-esque garb, which also consists of a bow at the neck, a collar frill, huge cuffs (which, by the way, are not attached to any sleeves), brown gloves, and a green shirt thing that I'd like to say is a jerkin.
Zidane also wears a tight white shirt under that green (more of a teal, really) thing, blue pants with a strange belt, loose-fitting boots that are nearly knee length, and a holster on his left hip for his sword(s).
The young boy is leanly muscled, skinny, and has blue eyes. And last but not least, my favorite thing about his appearance: his bangs defy gravity and stand above his head somewhat like an umbrella.
History:
Zidane is a Genome, which is a creation of one Garland who aspired to kill off all the souls of one planet—Gaia—to make room for the souls of the people of Garland’s planet, Terra. Genomes were meant to cause death and destruction on Gaia to prepare it for assimilation with Terra. Genomes themselves have no souls, but those that do are immensely powerful. Kuja was the first Genome to receive a soul from Garland and Zidane the second. However, Zidane was designed to be more perfect than Kuja, which made the elder Genome envious and consequently made him throw Zidane onto Gaia before the second Genome knew of his orders.
Zidane arrived on Gaia with no memories and was taken in by the Tantalus Theater Troupe/ band of thieves. They raised him in Lindblum, their hometown.
The plot to steal the princess of Alexandria brought Zidane and Garnet together. After the capture, the troupe’s airship—the Prima Vista--is severely damaged and forced to land in the Evil Forest. Garnet is lost in the collision and Zidane wants to go look for her, but Baku, the leader of Tantalus, tells him that leaving to look for her will be the same as leaving Tantalus. In this way, Zidane leaves his adopted family and starts his adventure.
The game has a beautifully complex story, but it is necessary to highlight a few more details about Zidane’s history.
Zidane goes from casually flirting with Garnet like he would with the any other girl to truly caring about her and falling in love with her.
Like many Japanese stories, Zidane forgives Kuja for what he’s done and tries to save him. The attempt seems to have killed Zidane as well until you watch the ending performance of I Want To Be Your Canary. I suppose that Zidane’s “virtue quote” could be rewritten to say “you don’t need a reason to deny to help people.” After all, Kuja was evil and killed hundreds of people, yet Zidane still tries to save him.
The end of the game appears to show Zidane and Garnet living happily ever after.
Personality:
As Square Enix is proud to point out, Zidane is not sullen and depressed like Cloud and Squall who came before him. As his “virtue” quote states, “you don’t need a reason to help people,” Zidane will help whoever he can by whatever means available to him.
Zidane is playful and carefree, preferring not to dwell in the past but to look to the future with eager eyes, and what’s more, with no expectations to ground it. He’s more of a “what will come, will come” kind of guy, even when the game grows darker and the other characters don’t necessarily want to see what has to come. He’s also the kind of guy who will support you no matter what. Zidane believes in people and in himself. Similarly, he’s very open-minded. And he’s the kind of person who can be friends with anyone. Even if they don’t want to be friends with him. Like Amarant. tee hee
He’s a bit of a flirt, but he’s not particularly bothered by the fact that the appeal usually goes unreturned.
